Red Sox signed LHP Matt Maloney to a minor league contract.
Maloney had Tommy John surgery last July, so he won't appear in any games until the second half. The southpaw allowed 10 runs over 11 innings for the Twins last season.

Matt Maloney (shoulder) will undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday.
His season is obviously over, and he'll struggle to make it back to full health before the All-Star break next year. Maloney made nine appearances (11 innings) with the Twins before being designated for assignment. The 28-year-old right-hander will continue to serve as organizational depth when healthy.

Matt Maloney will undergo Tommy John surgery.
Maloney revealed the news himself on Twitter. "My season is officially over," he tweeted. "Gotta have tommy john surgery. Gonna be a lengthy recovery, but I'll be back stronger then ever." Maloney, who allowed 10 runs over 11 innings earlier this season for the Twins, will be sidelined until around midseason next year.

Twins sent Matt Maloney outright to Triple-A Rochester.
Maloney cleared waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week. He posted a 8.18 ERA in nine appearances with the Twins and will accept a role as organizational depth.

Red Sox placed RHP Clay Buchholz on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 9, with a strained neck.
Buchholz was able to throw a bullpen session on Tuesday, but evidently he's still not feeling well enough to make his start on Saturday. It's not clear at this point how long he'll be out. The Red Sox are expected to call up Allen Webster to start over the weekend.

Joel Hanrahan was upbeat Friday after he required Tommy John surgery in addition to flexor tendon surgery on Thursday.
Hanrahan will be in a cast for ten days, but will start the rehab process shortly thereafter. Either way, he's looking at a 12-to-14 month timetable for his return. Hanrahan, who is a free agent after the season, is a long way away from having any tangible fantasy value.

Red Sox placed RHP Clayton Mortensen on the 15-day disabled list with a right hip impingement.
Mortensen has been battling the injury since April and finally agreed to take a few weeks off. The right-hander has posted a 5.34 ERA in 30 1/3 innings this year.
