Rick Porcello struggled against the Indians on Tuesday, giving up four runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Porcello struck out six and walked three while falling to 3-4 on the season with a 5.29 ERA. His inconsistency has been a big part of the reason for the Tigers' struggles to this point. The 23-year-old will attempt to turn things around when he takes on the Twins in Minnesota on Sunday.

Rick Porcello lost to the A's after giving up four runs and nine hits in five innings Friday.
Porcello was coming off two fine starts, but he's a hard guy to trust. A good starter should be able to survive against a lineup like Oakland's even without his good stuff. Porcello, though, just isn't there yet, and even though he's still just 23, it's worth wondering what kind of upside he really has. At least a matchup against the Twins is up next.

Rick Porcello held the White Sox to one run on four hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings of Sunday's 3-1 win.
He struck out five. Porcello's only real mistake came in the first, where he became Adam Dunn's latest home run victim. Porcello has now been quality in back-to-back outings after getting roughed up for 14 runs in 7 2/3 combined innings in his April 21 (Texas) and April 26 (Seattle) starts. He has an excellent matchup lined up for Friday, where he'll get the A's in Oakland.

Rick Porcello went eight innings against the Royals Tuesday, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out three in a 9-3 win.
It's been a roller coaster ride for Porcello this season, as he was terrific in his first two starts, horrible in his next two and now good again in this one. We're still hopeful that he could take a step forward this season, but obviously the consistency will need to improve. He'll bring a 5.64 ERA and 1.32 WHIP to next week's favorable start in Seattle.

Victor Martinez (knee surgery) has been off crutches for 10 days.
Martinez had microfracture surgery on his left knee in late January and underwent a procedure in early March to help the healing of his ACL. V-Mart can't afford any setbacks, but he's encouraged about the possibility of returning in September. We should know more about his status when he undergoes an MRI during a check-up in July.

Valverde hasn't pitched since last Tuesday because of lower back tightness. The 34-year-old right-hander has a 5.51 ERA and is just 7-for-9 in save opportunities this season but remains a strong fantasy option at closer and should be made active in all leagues immediately.

Luis Marte (hamstring) tossed three scoreless innings Monday in a rehab appearance at Triple-A Toledo.
Marte walked one and struck out two while allowing just one hit. He needed only 35 total pitches to get through the three solid frames. The right-hander should be ready for activation from the disabled list within the next few days but might just remain stationed in the Toledo 'pen.

AN MRI taken Wednesday on Daniel Schlereth's ailing left shoulder showed no structural damage.
Good news. Schlereth is already performing range of motion exercises and should soon be cleared to resume throwing. He's been on the disabled list since late April.

Al Alburquerque (elbow) has begun long-tossing at the Tigers' spring training facility in Florida.
Albuquerque is throwing from 150 feet, and if he continues to be progress should be cleared to throw off a mound before long. The Tigers are hoping to get the hard-throwing reliever back around the All-Star break.
