Athletics optioned RHP Fautino De Los Santos to Triple-A Sacramento.
While De Los Santos has a 3.00 ERA and 3/3 K/BB ratio over three innings this season, he hasn't recorded an out in each of his last three appearances. The 26-year-old right-hander still has the potential to be a future closer for Oakland, but he'll continue to hone his craft in the minors.

Fautino De Los Santos has not allowed a run in five relief appearances this season for the A's.
De Los Santos has surrendered four hits and walked three in just three innings, but those jams haven't cost him. The 26-year-old right-hander could join the ninth-inning mix later this summer if Grant Balfour is traded.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin indicated to reporters Monday that Fautino De Los Santos is not being considered for the team's ninth-inning opening.
"He’s a guy that has the ceiling to close at some point," said Melvin. "I don’t know that it’s now." Brian Fuentes and Grant Balfour are currently considered the front-runners for the job. De Los Santos, 26, registered a sparkling 11.6 K/9 in 33 1/3 innings last season as a rookie.

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle writes that Fautino De Los Santos "is a possible successor" to Andrew Bailey if the Athletics wind up trading their closer.
De Los Santos, 25, has just 34 games of big league experience under his belt, and he's posted a pedestrian 4.32 ERA in those appearances. But, he also boasts an 11.6 K/9 rate over that time, which is just a tick below the 11.7 K/9 rate he's posted in his minor league career. However, with Grant Balfour and Brian Fuentes on the roster, it seems likely that De Los Santos is viewed more as the long-term closer rather than someone that would get the job in 2012 if Bailey is dealt.

Inge was placed on the disabled list 10 days ago with a strained left groin. He's optimistic about returning when he's first eligible Monday. The veteran third baseman has five home runs and 17 RBI in 11 games since joining the A's.

Scott Sizemore underwent successful surgery on his left knee Wednesday morning.
Sizemore was expected to open the season as the A's starting third baseman, but he tore the ACL in his left knee early in camp and has been ruled out for the entire 2012 season. However, he's fully expected to be ready for spring training next year.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Yoenis Cespedes (hand) felt good during a session in the batting cage Wednesday.
Cespedes made 30 swings with a regular bat and 10 with a fungo. It's not clear what the next step is for the Cuban defector, but he would seem to be close to ready for a rehab assignment if the A's choose to send him on one. Cespedes should rejoin the A's by late May or early June if he can avoid setbacks.

Suspended
Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that the team is not "locked into" activating Manny Ramirez on May 30.
Ramirez is eligible to join the A's on May 30, but the team wants him to get around 40 at-bats in the minors and show that he can produce offensively. He's 3-for-8 with two walks over his first three games with Triple-A Sacramento.

Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) is scheduled to resume throwing later this week and is expected to be ready for activation when first eligible on June 2.
Obviously, we won't know for sure if he'll be ready then until we see how he feels after picking up a ball again. But, the A's seem optimistic and McCarthy himself said when he went on the DL that he wouldn't be out long. Feel free to scoop him up in fantasy leagues if he's been dropped.

Braden had been playing catch often, but the A's have decided he needs to build up more shoulder strength before throwing again. He remains without a timetable for return, but we almost surely won't see him before the All-Star break.

The move clears a spot for the newly-claimed Travis Blackley on the active roster. Devine underwent Tommy John surgery last month and will miss the entire 2012 season.
