Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer insists that Anthony Rizzo's development -- and not his free agent/arbitration clock -- will dictate the timing of a promotion from Triple-A Iowa.
"Patience is the key driver in our decision making," explained Hoyer. "Last year the situation was nearly identical — struggling offense and Rizzo putting up huge numbers in Tucson. Clearly I made the wrong decision in bringing him up too early. His development was not complete.'' Rizzo is hitting .352/.418/.697 with 15 home runs, 42 RBI and a 1.115 OPS over 43 games at the Triple-A level this year, but Hoyer doesn't want to make the same mistake twice. Of course, his service clock certainly plays a part, as well. We recently heard that Rizzo may possibly join the Cubs when they need a designated hitter for six interleague road games next month, but calling him up that early and keeping him in the majors for the rest of the year would risk giving up a year of team control.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum said he will talk to team president Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer about the possibility of bringing Anthony Rizzo up in June.
Not surprisingly, Sveum notes that if Rizzo is promoted, he'll have to play regularly. That likely means a move to the outfield for Bryan LaHair. Rizzo is crushing Triple-A pitching this season to the tune of a .353/.418/.706 batting line with 14 homers and 39 RBI. Of course, he mashed in the minors last year, as well, before struggling in the bigs. Still, he'd be worth an immediate add in mixed leagues if promoted.

Cubs president Theo Epstein indicated that Anthony Rizzo and Brett Jackson will not be promoted from Triple-A anytime soon.
‘‘Those guys are continuing their development at Triple-A, and things that they’re working on, they need to continue to improve,’’ Epstein said. ‘‘We’re also not giving up on guys after a homestand and a road trip. Guys are trying to get into the rhythm of a season and show what they can do." Rizzo is off to a torrid start, batting .393/.433/.786 with seven homers, while Jackson is hitting .254/.362/.508 with two homers and two steals. Both players will get their chance eventually, but they'll have to be patient.

Cubs optioned 1B Anthony Rizzo to Triple-A Iowa.
As expected. Rizzo raked this spring, batting .364/.417/.545 with two homers, but the Cubs want to get him more Triple-A seasoning after he struggled mightily in his big league stint with the Padres last year. The team would love for Bryan LaHair to hit and hang on to the first base job, but it's not hard to envision him struggling and Rizzo tearing it up at Triple-A, eventually leading to a first-half promotion. Fellow top prospect Brett Jackson, who isn't on the 40-man roster, was also sent to minor league camp.

Geovany Soto
D.L.
Cubs placed C Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list with a slight tear in his left meniscus.
He'll need arthroscopic surgery, which will sideline him for around three weeks. The Cubs acquired Koyie Hill from the Reds earlier in the day for depth and officially purchased his contract from the minors. With Steve Clevenger (oblique) still out and Welington Castillo out for a week with a mild MCL sprain in his right knee, Hill and Blake Lalli will share catching duties for now.

Steve Clevenger
D.L.
Steve Clevenger (oblique) went 0-for-2 on Wednesday in his second rehab game with Triple-A Iowa.
He also played four innings behind the plate. Clevenger should be ready rejoin the Cubs within the next few days and figures to get a good amount of playing time with Geovany Soto and Welington Castillo both sidelined.

Welington Castillo
D.L.
Cubs placed C Welington Castillo on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right knee.
Castillo was diagnosed with a mild MCL sprain last week and will need at least 15 days of recovery time. Blake Lalli has taken over the Cubs' backup catcher role.

Carlos Marmol (hamstring) threw a successful bullpen session Wednesday in Des Moines, Iowa.
If he wakes up feeling no abnormal discomfort on Thursday morning, Marmol should be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday night with Triple-A Iowa. The 28-year-old right-hander is aiming to return to the Cubs' bullpen by next weekend. He is sure to be eased back into high-leverage relief appearances.

Marcos Mateo
D.L.
Cubs placed RHP Marcos Mateo on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.
Mateo came down with a bit of soreness in his forearm near the end of spring training. He missed a majority of 2011 with forearm troubles, so the Cubs are going to play it as safe as possible with the righty reliever.

Lendy Castillo
D.L.
Cubs placed RHP Lendy Castillo on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 12, with a left groin strain.
The strain is being referred to as "moderate," so it could be more than a minimum stay on the DL for the Rule 5 pick. Scott Maine takes his spot on the roster.
