Jose Veras earned his 13th save of the season Saturday in the Astros' 4-3 win over the White Sox.
Veras issued a leadoff walk to Dayan Viciedo and then allowed pinch-runner Jordan Danks to steal second base. But the Houston closer struck out Gordon Beckham and Tyler Flowers and picked Danks off second to finish the game. Veras has a cool 3.60 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 36/13 K/BB ratio through 30 innings this season.

Jose Veras struck out two in a perfect ninth to earn a save against the Angels on Friday.
Veras had given up runs in three of his last four appearances, so he needed the nice outing tonight to bolster his job security. He ended up with seven saves in nine chances in May, which is a nice improvement from a month of April in which he was handed just three chances, converting two.

Astros manager Bo Porter said Wednesday that Jose Veras remains the team's closer.
Veras has given up four runs over his last three appearances, taking a pair of losses. The Astros don't have any other real alternatives, though, so he has some leash by default. He's pitched two days in a row and might not be available Wednesday, so Hector Ambriz, he of the 4.94 ERA and 1.52 WHIP, could get a shot at a save if the 'Stros manage to grab a lead.

Jose Veras took his fourth loss after giving up a run in a tie game against the Rockies on Tuesday.
Veras gave up two hits in an inning for the first time since way back on April 13. In fact, he had allowed just two hits total in his last 13 1/3 innings of work. Even though the loss dropped Veras to 0-4, he's still pretty secure in his closer's role.

Astros manager Bo Porter suggested Friday that Justin Maxwell (hand) may not be the starting center fielder when he returns from the disabled list.
Maxwell is still locked into a starting job, but could be used in one of the corner outfield spots. "I'm going to say that he will start. I'm not going to say it will be at center field," Porter said. "Brandon Barnes has done a great job there. He will warrant some continued playing time. That's why we've had Maxwell play some places beside center field [during his rehab assignment]."

Paul Clemens left Monday's appearance with a right pinkie injury.
Clemens was struck by a comebacker and appeared to dislocate the finger, but the Astros' trainer popped it back in place and he stayed in to face one more batter. The club reconsidered after that, though, and decided to remove him. Clemens saved the bullpen with 5 1/3 scoreless relief frames after Erik Bedard lasted only 1/3 of an inning.

Astros placed RHP Edgar Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 26, with a right shoulder strain.
Gonzalez complained of soreness earlier this week, so he'll now get some extended rest. Josh Fields will replace him in the Astros' bullpen.

Alex White will undergo Tommy John surgery.
White showed diminished velocity this spring and was diagnosed with a strained pitching elbow, but the injury turned out to be worse than that. The young right-hander will obviously miss all of 2013 and might not be ready for the start of 2014.
