Nationals' prospect left-hander Sammy Solis (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery next Tuesday.
As expected. The surgery will be performed in Los Angeles by Dr. Lewis Yocum, who was also the surgeon for Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmermann. Solis, who was recently ranked as the Nationals' No. 8 prospect by Baseball America, will be shelved until the 2013 season.

Solis first began experiencing discomfort in his throwing elbow while pitching in the Arizona Fall League and was unable to get through a routine side session this week. The 23-year-old left-hander posted a 3.26 ERA and 93/23 K/BB ratio in 96 2/3 innings last season between two levels of Single-A and was recently ranked as the organization's No. 8 prospect by Baseball America.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said Thursday that prospect left-hander Sammy Solis (elbow) was examined by multiple doctors over the offseason and that "there was a little difference of opinions."
Solis was shut down during the Arizona Fall League due to elbow soreness, so the Nationals are curious to see how he'll respond as he builds up his workload at accelerated minor-league camp. "We had him rest over the winter. We shut him down," said Rizzo. "And now we'll ramp him up and see what happens. So there's a little question." The 23-year-old left-hander posted a 3.26 ERA and 93/23 K/BB ratio over 96 2/3 innings last season between Class A Hagerstown and High-A Potomac and was recently ranked as the organization's No. 8 prospect by Baseball America.

Ramos missed a couple weeks last month with the same injury. He doesn't think the strain is too bad, but it's possible the Nats will play it safe and hold him out longer this time around.

Jayson Werth (hamstring) will not be ready for activation from the disabled list on Friday and could be sidelined for as much as two more weeks.
Nationals manager Davey Johnson said he received an "alarming" report on Werth Monday, which obviously doesn't sound good. The outfielder experienced a setback with his hamstring during a rehab game last week and has yet to return to game action. He was slated to see a specialist over the weekend and evidently didn't receive good news. Roger Bernadina and Tyler Moore will continue to be the primary fill-ins for Werth.

Nationals placed RHP Ryan Mattheus on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 20, with a fractured right hand.
Mattheus suffered the injury Sunday after he gave up five runs on four hits and two walks over one inning against the Padres and punched his locker in frustration. No word yet on how long he'll be sidelined, but he's obviously facing an extended absence. The Nationals are calling up Yunesky Maya and Fernando Abad for some bullpen insurance.

Christian Garcia (forearm) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment this weekend with Double-A Harrisburg.
Garcia has been shut down since the early part of spring training with a partial tendon tear in his right forearm, but he's ready to return to game action. The Nationals were planning to stretch him out as a starter prior to the injury, but he'll pitch in relief for the time being.
