Francisco Liriano tossed two hitless and scoreless innings in Monday's 5-4 loss to Cleveland, compiling three strikeouts and three walks in the effort.
It was Liriano's first outing since being demoted to the bullpen. He retired the first five batters faced, then walked the next three, and then got out of trouble by ringing up Michael Brantley. The struggling left-handed has a long way to go to return to the rotation. Despite posting zeroes on the scoreboard, his penchant for wildness remains a deep concern.

Francisco Liriano has been demoted to the bullpen.
It's an unfortunate but necessary move. Liriano registered a hideous 9.45 ERA, 2.10 WHIP and 21/19 K/BB ratio across his first 26 2/3 innings (six starts) this season. The 28-year-old left-hander will presumably work as the long man in the Minnesota bullpen and can be dropped in all fantasy leagues.

Francisco Liriano's struggles continued Monday, as he yielded four runs on five hits and three walks over five innings in a loss to the Angels.
He struck out four and served up a homer to Alberto Callaspo. Liriano still hasn't gone more than 5 1/3 innings in any start, he's walked at least three in every outing but one and sports a hideous 21/19 K/BB ratio over 26 2/3 innings. If you've been desperately hanging on to him in mixed leagues, it might be time to cut bait. He'll take a 9.45 ERA and 2.10 WHIP into this weekend's start against the Blue Jays, assuming he's not booted from the rotation.

Francisco Liriano dropped to 0-4 after giving up four runs in 5 1/3 innings Tuesday against the Angels.
It still qualifies as an improvement for Liriano, who entered with an 11.02 ERA this season. He struck out five and walked three, and since he bounced back after giving up all four runs in the second and third innings, he probably earned himself another start.

Twins placed RHP Nick Blackburn on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left quad.
Blackburn battled the injury throughout Wednesday's start against the Tigers and was rocked for six earned runs in just two innings. The Twins need to get him right, which could take around three weeks. Blackburn has an 8.37 ERA and 1.77 WHIP through seven starts this season. It was originally announced that Doumit was heading to the disabled list, but he's merely day-to-day with a left calf strain.

Updating a previous item, Scott Baker underwent Tommy John surgery Tuesday instead of just having a cleanup of the scar tissue in his flexor pronator as originally reported.
It's a significant difference, as Baker would likely have entered spring training healthy if he only had the flexor pronator cleaned out. Now, he'll almost surely be sidelined into the 2013 season. An MRI hadn't showed any damage to Baker's ulnar collateral ligament, but Dr. David Altcheck discovered damage while the righty was opened up and went ahead with the procedure.

Kyle Waldrop (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Fort Myers Saturday.
Waldrop began the season on the disabled list with a right elbow strain. The Twins haven't said how many rehab outings he'll need, but he should certainly be ready before the end of the month if he doesn't have any setbacks. He's not lock to be added to the major league roster, though.
