Padres agreed to terms with first-round pick RHP Joe Ross.
Ross was plucked out of a California high school with the 25th overall pick in June's First-Year Player Draft. He boasts a fastball that has been clocked at 95 mph, along with a promising curve and changeup. The 18-year-old had made a commitment to pitch at UCLA, but will now enter pro ball.

The Padres selected California high school pitcher Joe Ross with the 25th overall pick.
The younger brother of A's pitcher Tyson Ross, Joe has a great build and a fastball that has been clocked at 95 MPH. He also throws a curve and changeup, though both pitches do need some work. The 18-year-old is committed to UCLA and could decide to become a Bruin if the Padres don't pay up. If he does sign, he'll have the spacious confines PETCO Park to look forward to.

Suspended
Yasmani Grandal will begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Tucson.
Grandal is still serving his 50-game suspension for a positive PED test, but he is allowed to begin a 10-game minor league assignment. The 24-year-old backstop is eligible to join the Padres on May 28 and may split playing time with Nick Hundley upon his return.

Forsythe has been taking batting practice for a week with no issues and is ready to take the next step. He's been out all season with plantar fasciitis in his right foot, so he'll need plenty of rehab at-bats before returning.

Cameron Maybin (wrist) went 1-for-3 with a single in his first rehab game Friday with Triple-A Tucson.
Maybin is expected to need around 30 rehab at-bats, so he's on track to return sometime next week. The 26-year-old outfielder has been out since April 15 with a right wrist impingement.

Clayton Richard (illness) gave up two runs in six innings Tuesday in his second minor league rehab start with Triple-A Tucson.
Richard, out since May 4 with an intestinal virus, gave up five hits and no walks while striking out four. The southpaw threw 65 out of 94 pitches for strikes. It should be enough for the Padres to activate him from the disabled list.

Cory Luebke (elbow) has had his throwing program stopped for the second time this year in his attempt to return from Tommy John surgery.
Luebke was shut down in early March before resuming sessions of catch on April 1, and he had progressed to throwing off a mound before this latest setback. Obviously none of this bodes well for his mission to return to live major league games by the All-Star break.

Joe Wieland (elbow) threw a bullpen session Friday at the Padres' spring training complex.
Wieland, currently on the 60-day disabled list, is nine months removed from Tommy John surgery and will continued to be moved along slowly. If he can avoid setbacks, Wieland should be game-ready sometime after the All-Star break.

Kelly will undergo Tommy John surgery during the first week of April. Obviously, he won't be making any contribution this season.
