Kendall Rogers of Perfect Game USA reports that there is a deal between the Rays and first-round pick Richie Shaffer.
The deal isn't officially signed yet, but he's expected to get a bonus in the range of $1.7 million, which is right in line with the $1.725 million slot recommendation for the No. 25 overall pick. Shaffer was regarded as one of the top college bats in this year's draft class. While he's blocked by Evan Longoria at the big league level, some scouts believe he'll end up at first base or in right field.

According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, the Rays are nearing a deal with first-rounder Richie Shaffer.
Shaffer was selected 25th overall out of Clemson in last month's MLB Amateur Draft. The 21-year-old corner infielder has major power potential and should rise swiftly through the Rays' minor league system. The deadline to get deals struck is Friday at 5 p.m. ET.

Rays selected Clemson 1B/3B Richie Shaffer with the No. 25 overall pick in the 2012 draft.
Perhaps this year's top college power bat, Shaffer can play either corner infield spot, but will likely be slated for first with Evan Longoria occupying the hot corner in Tampa. Shaffer has the athleticism to man right field if need be. A polished hitter with relatively few holes in his swing, there's a strong chance Shaffer will reach the big leagues.

Rays placed LHP David Price on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left triceps muscle.
Price suffered the injury Wednesday night in his start against the Red Sox. An MRI taken shortly after his exit showed no major damage and the Rays are optimistic that he will only miss a few turns in the rotation, but nothing is certain quite yet. Jake Odorizzi and Chris Archer are the primary candidates to replace Price.

Gomes had been pitching well for Tampa, putting up a 1.03 WHIP and 16/2 K/BB ratio over 11 2/3 innings. It's not clear at this point how long he'll be out. Josh Lueke has replaced him on the roster.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the newly-acquired Jeff Beliveau. Niemann underwent shoulder surgery last week and is unlikely to return this season.

Rays purchased the contract of RHP Juan Carlos Oviedo, placed him on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.
Oviedo is working his way back from Tommy John surgery and will miss most, if not all, of the 2013 season. The Rays obviously have decided he's worth hanging onto in hopes he can contribute in 2014.
