Rays prospect 3B Richie Shaffer went 1-for-4 with his 16th home run of the season on Wednesday for Triple-A Durham.
Shaffer has been a beast since moving up to Durham in late May, batting .309/.400/.557 with nine home runs, six doubles and 18 RBI in 23 games for the Bulls. The 24-year-old corner infielder opened the season at Double-A Montgomery, where he posted a .262/.362/.470 batting line with seven home runs and 10 doubles in 39 games. Between both levels, the 2012 first-rounder is batting a robust .278/.375/.557 with 16 home runs, 16 doubles and 45 RBI in 62 games. It goes without saying that Shaffer is having a breakout year after batting just .222/.318/.440 in 119 games for Montgomery last season. While he lacks a clear path to playing time in the major leagues at the hot corner, the Rays conceivably could try to get Shaffer’s bat in the lineup at first base. Jun 25 - 3:06 PM
