Mets prospect SS Gavin Cecchini went 1-for-3 with a solo home run on Monday for Double-A Binghamton.
Cecchini quietly has enjoyed a strong first month at Binghamton, batting .325/.381/.506 with nine extra-base hits and a 7/6 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 22 games. The uptick in production for the 22-year-old is a good sign, as he’s just a .258/.326/.364 hitter in 257 career minor league games. He did begin to show more in-game power last year, accruing eight homers, 27 doubles and five triples between the Low- and High-A levels, but he’s unlikely to offer more than below-average pop at maturity. Meanwhile, Cecchini’s path to the major leagues likely will depend on how the Mets address their current shortstop situation over the course of the season. May 12 - 1:41 PM
