Lions LT Jeff Backus (biceps surgery) has been participating in the team's offseason training the past three weeks.
Backus says he's right on schedule in his recovery from January surgery. He's expected to be on the field for OTAs, even if his participation level is scaled back to next to nothing. Owner of a 177 consecutive games streak, Backus is a good bet to be ready to go by training camp.

Lions president Tom Lewand confirmed Thursday that the team expects LT Jeff Backus (biceps tear) to be a full-go by training camp.
Backus could even get in some work at post-draft OTAs. While the 34-year-old may have one more season left as a starter, the Lions need to start thinking about the future of their tackle position sooner rather than later. RT Gosder Cherilus is in a contract year, and Backus isn't long for the league.

Lions re-signed LT Jeff Backus to a two-year, $10 million contract.
Backus was a necessary re-signing for the Lions, who didn't have any in-house options to replace him. The 35-year-old has made a franchise-record 176 consecutive starts, but will head into next season coming off post season surgery and an increasingly broken-down body. The Lions are certainly still a threat to use their first-round pick on a left offensive tackle.

Backus is 34 and recovering from a torn biceps, but could draw two- to three-year offers in a thin market for tackles. With no in-house replacement at the ready, the Lions are unlikely to let a player who's made a franchise-record 176 consecutive starts get away.

Jahvid Best (concussions) was a full participant at Lions OTA practice Monday.
Best worked with the first-team offense and was not limited in the no-contact practice. Mikel Leshoure (Achilles') also participated on a limited basis, before admitting he's not yet 100 percent. Best will be a dicey 2012 fantasy pick, but we like him as a high-end RB3. He projects as a 12-15 touch-per-game back.

The Detroit News expects Mikel Leshoure to eventually draw a two-game suspension for his twin offseason marijuana arrests.
Leshoure has enrolled in the NFL's substance abuse program, and is being tested "several times" a week. Still rehabbing his torn Achilles', Leshoure insisted he is "feeling great" at Lions OTAs. "I don't know what percentage it's at or anything because I haven't really pushed it to the limit yet," he said. "There's plenty of time for that. ... But I will be ready to roll by the season."

Second-round WR Ryan Broyles (ACL surgery) is not participating in team drills at Lions OTAs.
"I am just doing as much as I can," Broyles said. "(Monday) was my first day of practice. I am about half-speed but I feel good." Coach Jim Schwartz said Broyles is on a good pace in his rehab. "Everything he does is part of a very structured progression," Schwartz said. "We will start increasing his workload based on how his body feels. He's having a very good rehab. He's doing well."
