Ravens placed ILB Ray Lewis and C Matt Birk on the reserve/retired list.
With the move, the Ravens save $6.4 million against the salary cap, which is now officially set at $123.9 million, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Birk announced his retirement last Friday, and Lewis made it known that he was retiring before the playoffs. Lewis is a sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Famer.

Ray Lewis strongly denied banned substance allegations Wednesday.
In a Sports Illustrated report, the owner of a company called Sports With Alternatives to Steroids says Lewis took a deer-antler spray that included IGF-1. "I never ever took what he says. The guy has no credibility," said Lewis, who went on to call Mitch Ross a "coward." We'll never know the truth here. The only way IGF-1 is detectable is through a blood test, and there's currently no blood testing for that in the NFL. The bottom line is that Lewis is in no danger of missing Sunday's Super Bowl and will then ride off into the sunset.

According to the Baltimore Sun, the deer-antler spray Ray Lewis allegedly obtained from sports science company S.W.A.T.S. is unlikely to have contained a banned substance.
Lewis is accused of using a spray that contains banned substance IGF-1, but a doctor who studies growth hormone deficiency for Johns Hopkins University says that's not possible. "It’s just simply not possible for (IGF-1) to come from a spray," Dr. Roberto Salvatori said. "If (it) were, a lot of people would be happy that they don’t need to get shots anymore." The story will likely continue to be propped up as a distraction ahead of Sunday's Super Bowl, but it's a non-issue for the soon-to-be retired Lewis.

According to Sports Illustrated, Ray Lewis contacted the sports science company S.W.A.T.S. in October to help with recovery from his torn triceps.
The owner of the company, Mitch Ross, allegedly recorded conversations between himself and Lewis. A program that included a deer-antler spray that includes IGF-1, which is on the NFL's banned-substance list, was prescribed. "Just pile me up and just send me everything you got, because I got to get back this week," Lewis said. There figures to be an investigation, but it won't wrap up until after Sunday's Super Bowl. At that point, Lewis will be retired.

Ravens assistant GM Eric DeCosta said the team is "very excited" about Jacoby Jones as a receiver this season.
"We're very excited about Jacoby and the progress he made throughout last season," DeCosta said. "We think we've got some very good young players that can step up and contribute. Deonte Thompson isn't a heralded name, but a guy we think is going to be a good player. We're excited about Tandon Doss. David Reed has had a lot of injuries. He's flashed in practice and made plays." Add Tommy Streeter to the list of young receivers who could see a bigger role in 2013. DeCosta also wouldn't rule out the Ravens signing a veteran receiver.

Ravens placed WR LaQuan Williams on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, ending his season.
A deep reserve, Williams appeared in just 11 games on special teams this season, and failed to play a snap on offense. The second-year undrafted free agent will have to claw for a roster spot in 2013.
