4/10/2012: Signed a four-year, $37.75 million contract w/2016 Option. The deal contains $16.8 million guaranteed, including a $10 million signing bonus and each of Smith's first three base salaries. 2012: $1 million, 2013: $3.75 million, 2014: $4 million (+ $3 million option bonus), 2015: $7 million, 2016: $9 million (Option Year), 2017: Free Agent

Panthers signed WR Steve Smith to a three-year extension.
Smith was entering a walk year with a $10.9 million cap number. The new deal locks him up through 2015, and includes an option for 2016, when he will be 37. Financial terms are not yet available, but Pro Football Weekly reports the deal is believed to be structured like Reggie Wayne's recent three-year, $17.5 million pact. It's a huge commitment for a player who turns 33 in May, but Smith is coming off one of his finest seasons. His 1,394 receiving yards were fifth in the league, while his 79 catches were his most since 2007. Reasonably durable and still capable of beating double coverage, there's a chance Smith could remain an asset through the life of his new contract. The Panthers reportedly must make a decision on his 2016 option in the summer of 2014.

Despite going on age 33, Steve Smith said Friday that he believes he can play four more seasons in the NFL.
"I hope I can play four more years at a pretty decent level," he said. "I'm not the prototype receiver, so I'm kind of breaking the mold, anyway. If I keep taking care of my body. I haven't really had any really bad injuries." Smith finished the regular season fifth in the league in receiving yards. His 17.6 yards-per-reception average was the second highest of his career.

Steve Smith caught six passes for 86 yards with a touchdown in the Week 17 loss to the Saints.
Smith proved this year that all he had been missing was a real quarterback. Boosted immediately by the arrival of Cam Newton, Smith racked up 79 catches for 1,394 yards and seven touchdowns, his best season since 2008. Smith will be 33 in May, but has shown no signs of slowing down. He's a legit WR1 for 2012 fantasy drafts.

Steve Smith was held to one catch for nine yards in Week 16 against the Buccaneers.
Smith was shutdown by Ronde Barber in the first half and fell victim to gameflow with the Panthers comfortably ahead midway through the third quarter. He continues to struggle against the Buccaneers both this year and historically, with just six touchdowns in his 17 career games against them.
