Browns signed franchise player K Phil Dawson to a one-year, $3.81 million contract.
The move makes Dawson one of the Browns' highest-paid players. Dawson converted 24-of-29 field-goal attempts last season, but produced just 10 touchbacks despite the league's new kickoff rules. The Browns remain hopeful of working out a long-term deal with Dawson, who has been with the franchise since 1999.

Browns assigned the franchise tag to K Phil Dawson.
The normal kicker tag is $2.665 million, but Dawson costs $3.81M because he played last year as the Browns' franchise player. It's a lot to pay for a 37-year-old kicker. Dawson connected on 24-of-29 field goal tries in 2011, although he had two of them blocked and managed only 10 touchbacks. Assuming he keeps the tag, Dawson will easily be the NFL's most overpaid kicker in 2012.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer expects K Phil Dawson to leave in free agency.
Dawson was slapped with the franchise tag prior to this season and went 7-of-8 on field goals from 50-plus yards out. He's relocated his family to Texas and is likely seeking a long-term deal elsewhere. Dawson will be 37 later this month.
