Speaking at the Scouting Combine Saturday, coach Mike Smith indicated Michael Turner will be back with the Falcons in 2012, but with a reduced role.
"We want to keep (Turner) as our feature back, but we need to make sure we some of the other guys carries as well," said Smith, adding that he wants Turner on a "pitch count in terms of the numbers of carries." Turner has been bandied about as a release candidate after displaying alarmingly little explosiveness for much of 2011, but remains in the Falcons' plans. He could be "asked" to take a pay-cut from his scheduled salary of $5 million, however. With only Jacquizz Rodgers under contract behind Turner, the Falcons are in the market for a running back.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Mark Bradley expects the Falcons to keep Michael Turner for 2012.
Bradley is a columnist with a "semi-educated guess" as opposed to working the Falcons beat. While he addresses Turner's non-existent trade value, Bradley skirts over the possibility of the Falcons flat-out releasing the 30-year-old back due $5 million while running on fumes. It's a lot of money to pay a player looking at a reduced role.

New Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said he has been ordered to improve the team's screen game.
It's another sign that the Falcons are going to scale back Michael Turner's role. On top of showing no burst through the hole at age 29, Turner's passing-game skills are well below average. He's caught 51 passes in 118 NFL games, an average of 0.4 per contest. If free agent Jason Snelling returns to Atlanta, he figures to see a boost in touches.

Coach Mike Smith plans to "evaluate" Michael Turner's touches moving forward.
Smith acknowledges Turner was playing with a nagging groin injury down the stretch, but also realizes the ground attack has to be more effective in 2012. An offensive albatross in six of the Falcons' final seven games, Turner is due $5 million in his age-30 season. If he does indeed return in 2012, the Falcons will have to scale back his role.
