Fred Davis is the Skins' slot tight end, so we're not sure how the lost weight will help Cooley's chances of securing the in-line role. Cooley's continued tenure with Washington may depend wholly on his willingness to take a pay cut.

Redskins TE Chris Cooley acknowledges contributing behind Fred Davis this season is "going to be a challenge."
Cooley also said that he trusts his troublesome left knee is healthy, and that he still wants to be "the guy" at tight end. It might be a not so subtle hint he's hoping for a trade. Due $3.8 million and set to count $6.23 million against the cap, it's more likely he is released.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan insisted Sunday that Chris Cooley has encountered no setbacks with his troublesome left knee.
It's perhaps a good sign for a player who needed the knee drained 15 times before going on I.R. last October, but there are no guarantees. Cooley is still owed a $3.8 million base salary and holds a salary cap number of $6.23 million. He'll almost certainly have to restructure in order to make the Redskins.

According to Redskins coach Mike Shanahan, Chris Cooley "feels as good as he’s felt for the last couple years."
"The knee is feeling great. His weight is down," Shanahan said. "There’s been no swelling, so hopefully he is full speed once we get started with our OTA days and you know, he can stay injury-free." Shanahan could be making the comments in an effort to pump up Cooley's feeble trade value ahead of the draft. With a cap number of $6.23 million, he's a strong candidate for release.

Rich Tandler of CSN Washington is the latest Redskins beat writer to list Leonard Hankerson as a starter over Josh Morgan.
Hankerson is coming off hip surgery, but figures to be practice-ready by June 11 minicamp. Tandler considers Pierre Garcon, Hankerson, and Morgan the only locks to make the team, which seems to give Morgan the advantage over Santana Moss for the No. 3 job. Hankerson, Morgan, and Moss figure to see time in the slot.
