Bills GM Buddy Nix confirmed Friday that Ryan Fitzpatrick's starting job is secure, despite Buffalo's addition of Vince Young.
Young was signed strictly to compete with Tyler Thigpen for the backup job. While fans may clamor for Young if Fitzpatrick struggles, the Bills' organization remains confident in its incumbent starting quarterback. Fitzpatrick is entering a bit of a make-or-break year, however. He's owed $7.25 million in 2013, including an early-offseason roster bonus of $3 million.

Coach Chan Gailey concedes that a severe rib injury led to a three-game slump for Ryan Fitzpatrick at mid-season in 2011.
Fitzpatrick was sailing along with 6-of-7 games over 88.0 in passer rating before a three-game mid-season stretch of 52.0 or lower. At the time, Gailey wasn't aware of the severity of the injury, which was as bad as or even worse than the one that plagued Tony Romo earlier in the season. Fitzpatrick should bounce back with an improved TD:INT ratio in 2012.

Sources tell the Buffalo News that Ryan Fitzpatrick's midseason injury in 2011 included four cracked ribs and an injured sternum.
It sounds pretty severe, but Fitzpatrick insists the injury had no effect on his performance. "My only reaction would be, I don't really want to comment at all," Fitzpatrick said. "I don't think injuries had any effect on the way I played this year, at any point. I don't want to get into it." The Bills are tentatively expected to pay Fitzpatrick's $5 million option bonus on March 19.

According to teammate David Nelson, Ryan Fitzpatrick played the second half of the season with cracked ribs.
Fitzpatrick's play had already begun to slip, but fell off dramatically after he suffered the injury in Week 8 against Washington. He averaged just 232.5 yards as the Bills went 1-8 down the stretch, posting a 10:16 TD:INT ratio. Although Fitzpatrick has faded badly following hot starts each of the past two years, Buffalo has given no indication it plans to decline his $5 million option bonus.

Stevie Johnson will undergo groin surgery "over the next couple of days" to repair the injury that plagued him throughout 2011.
He has three months before the start of training camp, which should be plenty of time. Johnson's agent characterized the operation as "extremely minor," and assured that his client would "be at [the Bills'] facility for all activities." Johnson played through the injury all last year. He still caught 76 passes for 1,004 yards and seven touchdowns, setting a career high with a 13.2 yards-per-reception average and finishing as the No. 21 fantasy receiver.

He'll be placed on injured reserve. Caussin, a second-year undrafted free agent out of D-IAA James Madison, finished with five catches for 41 yards in six appearances. He won't be on the 53-man roster to open next season.
