Bears quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh said Jay Cutler is "borderline football brilliant."
Cavanaugh made the assertion after watching film and overseeing four offseason workouts. It's high praise from a guy who has worked with Randall Cunningham, Joe Flacco and Phil Simms. Cutler projects to take a step forward in 2013 based on coaching alone. The improved offensive line and addition of Martellus Bennett are icing on the cake.

Jay Cutler reiterated that the Bears have made pass protection a "point of emphasis."
Cutler has been sacked a scary 148 times in 56 career games as a Bear. New coach Marc Trestman is out to change that, and the organization is on board. They signed free agent left tackle Jermon Bushrod to a $35M contract and spent the No. 20 overall pick on Oregon G Kyle Long. Cutler's fantasy arrow as a QB2 continues to point up after finishing last year as the No. 23 player at his position.

Jay Cutler reiterated Tuesday that he is not expecting a contract extension.
Cutler is entering the final year of the five-year, $49.7M deal he signed back in 2009. He's going to try to pull a Joe Flacco. "You've got to win games to earn those contracts. ... So we'll play it out and see how it goes," he said. Cutler does have a better chance for success this season as new offensive-minded head coach Marc Trestman places a greater emphasis on pass protection. Cutler has taken a mind-blowing 148 sacks in 56 games as a Bear.

Jay Cutler says the Bears are going to "protect the quarterback and get rid of ball fast as we can" this season.
"We don’t want to hold the ball. We don’t want to sit in the pocket for long periods of time," Cutler said. "Obviously there are going to be plays where we’re going to have to sit in there and deliver it. But for most part, we want it gone." Cutler also said he isn't concerned about entering the final year of his contract without an extension. "You’ve got to win games to earn those contracts. We’ll play it out and see how it goes."

Brandon Marshall (hip surgery) is not participating in this week's OTAs, as expected.
Marshall underwent a scope in January and is not quite at 100 percent yet. Although it's his third procedure on the troublesome joint, no one around the Bears appears concerned. Marshall has missed just five games in his seven-year career and is coming off a sparkling 118/1508/11 campaign.
