10/20/2009: Signed a five-year, $49.77 million contract. The deal contains $20 million guaranteed, including a $7 million signing bonus, Cutler's first-year salary, and $3.3 million of his 2010 base pay. New Bears QBs coach and de-facto passing game coordinator Jeremy Bates hopes to take advantage of Jay Cutler's athleticism in 2012.
Bates was Cutler's QBs coach his final year in Denver, where he threw for a career-high 4,526 yards. "We're going to use his feet," Bates said. "He's athletic, he can throw on the run, he can see downfield on the run." Bates also plans to have Cutler roll out more as opposed to the rigid dropbacks favored by former OC Mike Martz. Bates, Brandon Marshall, and Alshon Jeffery's additions are all promising developments for Cutler's fantasy value.

Coach Lovie Smith confirmed Thursday that Jay Cutler is recovered from the broken thumb that ended his 2011 season.
Cutler resumed throwing in late December, and will be all systems go for the Bears' offseason program. Last season was the first time since Cutler's rookie year (2006) that he failed to appear in at least 15 games.

Jay Cutler says he's "very happy" with the Bears' hiring of Jeremy Bates as QBs coach.
Bates was Cutler's QBs coach for his final two seasons with the Broncos. ''I've been a fan of him since I left Denver," Cutler said. "When I left Denver, I told him that somewhere down the line hopefully we can work together. This was a good situation for us.'' Cutler also admitted he hopes the Bears land a "big receiver" this offseason. ''Anyone over 6-2 at this point is going to look good."

Bears placed QB Jay Cutler (thumb) on injured reserve, ending his season.
Cutler was due to have the pins removed from his thumb today, and he's already begun throwing the ball. The Bears originally hoped to have their QB for the postseason, but they're now eliminated from the playoffs. A better NFL than fantasy quarterback in 2011, Cutler finishes the season with an 85.7 passer rating, 7.4 YPA, and a 13:7 TD-to-INT ratio in 10 games. Signed through 2013, Cutler will return as a high-end QB2 in 2012.

According to ESPN Chicago's Mike Wright, Johnny Knox (back surgery) looked "very frail" on the practice field in OTAs.
Knox revealed that he's lost 30 pounds since last year. After major surgery to stabilize his vertebra on December 19, Knox is in danger of missing the entire season. Already a relatively skinny player, the fact that he's not staying muscle bound suggests Knox doesn't plan on playing football anytime soon.
