7/27/2008: Signed a four-year, $40.975 million contract extension through 2013. The deal contains $15 million guaranteed, including a $5 million signing bonus and $5 million roster bonuses in both the second and third years. Despite installing a special package of plays designed to take advantage of his unique skills, the Bears acknowledge that Devin Hester's offensive snaps will be limited this season.
It's refreshing to see the Bears finally recognizing that Hester is best utilized as a situational player on offense. "It's just a matter of not having him play 70 plays and throw to him twice," said WRs coach Darryl Drake. "Play him 15 [plays], let him touch it 13 [times.]" That's not a realistic ratio, of course. We wouldn't expect more than five offensive touches per game (his career-high is under four per game) for Hester, no matter the snap count.

Devin Hester will return both kicks and punts for the Bears this season.
There was speculation that Hester might see a lesser role in the return game after the Bears added Eric Weems and Devin Thomas via free agency. That was especially the case after the coaching staff talked up Hester's offensive role. It's hard to believe Hester will play 50+ offensive snaps and handle most of the returns. The latter makes sense, but expect rookie Alshon Jeffrey and slot man Earl Bennett to eventually emerge at wide receiver.

According to ESPN Chicago, Devin Hester is currently penciled in as a starter opposite Brandon Marshall, leaving No. 45 overall pick Alshon Jeffery in the slot.
New QBs coach Jeremy Bates apparently "really likes Hester in the new system." We're not buying it. The undersized Hester has flopped every time he's been given a starting opportunity, and the Bears didn't trade up for Jeffery to man the slot. Even if Hester begins the year as a starter, it shouldn't take long for Jeffery to be shifted outside. Earl Bennett is the Bears' best slot receiver.

Brandon Marshall suggested that he could be outproduced by Devin Hester at wide receiver this season.
"I think he's going to have a bigger year than me," said Marshall, apparently with a straight face. Marshall feels the maturity of Jay Cutler plus new OC Jeremy Bates' up-tempo offense will lead to Hester's breakout season. We aren't buying it. Hester turns 30 this year and has yet to show signs that he's a starting-caliber receiver, let alone Pro Bowler. He'll continue to see a handful of touches, but expect Alshon Jeffrey and Earl Bennett to emerge behind Marshall.

According to ESPN Chicago's Mike Wright, Johnny Knox (back surgery) looked "very frail" on the practice field in OTAs.
Knox revealed that he's lost 30 pounds since last year. After major surgery to stabilize his vertebra on December 19, Knox is in danger of missing the entire season. Already a relatively skinny player, the fact that he's not staying muscle bound suggests Knox doesn't plan on playing football anytime soon.
