Bills coach Chan Gailey plans to continue to use Brad Smith in a gadget-type role in 2012.
Smith made five starts down the stretch in 2011, but averaged only 32 yards in them. He's not a natural wideout. "We were going along there and running the Wildcat with him and if you’d look, when our third-down efficiency dropped off was when we had to move him to wideout full-time," Gailey said. "...He can be your fifth or sixth wideout, he can be a good special teams player."

The Bills have ruled out WR/KR Brad Smith (hamstring, hip) for Week 17.
Coach Chan Gailey said Smith's hamstring injury "just won't go away." Instead of Naaman Roosevelt, the Bills will turn to Derek Hagan against the Pats.

Coach Chan Gailey ruled him out for Week 17 after practice. With an average of just over four yards per over the past three games, Smith wasn't going to be a fantasy option regardless.

Smith is dealing with both a sore hamstring and a hip flexor. He's managed just 13 yards on four receptions combined in Buffalo's last three games.

Stevie Johnson will undergo groin surgery "over the next couple of days" to repair the injury that plagued him throughout 2011.
He has three months before the start of training camp, which should be plenty of time. Johnson's agent characterized the operation as "extremely minor," and assured that his client would "be at [the Bills'] facility for all activities." Johnson played through the injury all last year. He still caught 76 passes for 1,004 yards and seven touchdowns, setting a career high with a 13.2 yards-per-reception average and finishing as the No. 21 fantasy receiver.

He'll be placed on injured reserve. Caussin, a second-year undrafted free agent out of D-IAA James Madison, finished with five catches for 41 yards in six appearances. He won't be on the 53-man roster to open next season.
