Unsigned franchise player Matt Prater is sitting out offseason workouts.
As is disgruntled DT Ty Warren, whom the Broncos want to take a pay cut. Unlike Warren, Prater isn't under contract and therefore not required to attend OTAs and minicamps. "There's no message. It's voluntary," Prater's agent said.

Broncos assigned the franchise tag to K Matt Prater.
The move guarantees Prater roughly $2.6 million. He joins Cleveland's Phil Dawson and Cincinnati's Mike Nugent as kickers to be tagged. Jacksonville's Josh Scobee and Tampa Bay's Connor Barth are strong candidates to join them ahead of Monday's 4PM ET deadline. Prater converted four "walkoff" field-goals in 2011, and led the NFL in touchback percentage. Since 2008, he is 12-of-16 on field-goal attempts of 50 yards or longer.

Broncos VP of Football Operations John Elway said Wednesday that his preference is to keep free agent K Matt Prater with a long-term deal rather than the franchise tag.
"We don’t want to use it," Elway said of the tag. "We’d like to get a deal done." Behind Willis McGahee and Demaryius Thomas, Prater was perhaps the Broncos' most valuable offensive player in 2011. He turns 28 before the season.

The Denver Post believes free agent K Matt Prater is the Broncos' "strongest candidate" for the franchise tag.
This jibes with a January report that the Broncos were going to be "relatively aggressive" in re-signing their kicker. Prater would stand to make roughly $2.6 million under the franchise tag after converting four "walkoff" field-goal attempts and leading the NFL in touchback percentage in 2011.

He appears to be ahead of schedule. Moreno had been discussed as a PUP candidate before the draft, following a November tear of his right ACL. Sliding down the depth chart, Moreno still has a fight ahead to crack the Broncos' 53.

Broncos TE Julius Thomas underwent surgery last week to repair ligaments in his ankle.
Surgery was performed by noted foot doctor Robert Anderson. Thomas will be limited throughout Denver's offseason program, but should be healthy in time for training camp. A former basketball player and fourth-round pick in 2011, Thomas finished his rookie season with one catch. He'll vie for playing time with Virgil Green and Joel Dreessen behind Jacob Tamme this summer.

Suspended
Broncos TE Virgil Green will not appeal his four-game suspension for violating the league's banned substances policy.
Green was suspended for ADHD. He took it "prior to obtaining an exemption from the league," and says he now has that exemption and is free to take ADHD going forward. "I apologize to my teammates, coaches and fans for my mistake," said Green, "and will make sure to never let anything like this happen again."
