Free agent RB Maurice Morris is not expected back in Detroit in 2012.
The Lions would rather re-sign Kevin Smith as insurance for Mikel Leshoure and Jahvid Best. In addition to Morris, the Lions are also expected to move on from LB Bobby Carpenter, safeties Erik Coleman and Chris Harris, CB Brandon McDonald, WR Maurice Stovall, and OG Leonard Davis.

Maurice Morris rushed five times for 22 yards in Detroit's Week 16 win over the Chargers, adding one catch for 10 yards.
After being held without a touch in Week 15, Morris only managed to get on the field after Kevin Smith missed a large chunk of the third quarter with an apparent aggravation of his ankle injury. A weak link in the Lions' well-oiled offense, Morris should see extremely limited snaps in the playoffs as long as Smith can stay healthy.

Playing through a chest injury, Maurice Morris rushed four times for 13 yards and added one catch for three yards in the Lions' Week 14 win over the Vikings.
Morris played extremely sparingly after sustaining his injury, allowing Keiland Williams to function as the feature back. But the fact that he was permitted to return to the game at all bodes well for his Week 15 status. We'll know more by Wednesday.

Maurice Morris left Sunday's game against the Vikings in the second quarter with a right arm/chest injury, but returned in the third quarter.
Morris may have lost some strength in his ball-carrying arm, so he was held out for a while. Plodding power back Keiland Williams came on, but Morris was able to return late in the third quarter.

Jahvid Best (concussions) was a full participant at Lions OTA practice Monday.
Best worked with the first-team offense and was not limited in the no-contact practice. Mikel Leshoure (Achilles') also participated on a limited basis, before admitting he's not yet 100 percent. Best will be a dicey 2012 fantasy pick, but we like him as a high-end RB3. He projects as a 12-15 touch-per-game back.

The Detroit News expects Mikel Leshoure to eventually draw a two-game suspension for his twin offseason marijuana arrests.
Leshoure has enrolled in the NFL's substance abuse program, and is being tested "several times" a week. Still rehabbing his torn Achilles', Leshoure insisted he is "feeling great" at Lions OTAs. "I don't know what percentage it's at or anything because I haven't really pushed it to the limit yet," he said. "There's plenty of time for that. ... But I will be ready to roll by the season."

Second-round WR Ryan Broyles (ACL surgery) is not participating in team drills at Lions OTAs.
"I am just doing as much as I can," Broyles said. "(Monday) was my first day of practice. I am about half-speed but I feel good." Coach Jim Schwartz said Broyles is on a good pace in his rehab. "Everything he does is part of a very structured progression," Schwartz said. "We will start increasing his workload based on how his body feels. He's having a very good rehab. He's doing well."
