Panthers RE Greg Hardy is seeking a contract extension heading into the final year of his rookie deal.
The timing is right for Hardy in that he's coming off a breakout season, but wrong in that the Panthers have little room to maneuver and defensive ends are settling for below-market deals all over the league. Hardy is due just $1.35 million in his walk year, so it's not as if the Panthers can dramatically lower his cap number in the form of an extension. We wouldn't expect an agreement any time soon.

Panthers RE Greg Hardy's 2013 salary jumped from $575,000 to $1.35 million based on rookie-deal incentives.
Hardy started all 16 games in 2011, but he didn't put up monster numbers. That changed in 2012, as he started just ten games, but recorded 61 tackles and 11 sacks. Hardy was stout both as a pass rusher and run stopper, grading out as Pro Football Focus' eighth-best 4-3 end, one spot behind teammate LE Charles Johnson. Hardy has finally started to live up to his potential that once had him pegged as a possible top-ten pick. The sixth-rounder out of Ole Miss is entering the final year of his deal.

Panthers RE Greg Hardy (not injury related) is not expected to play on Sunday against the Saints.
Hardy is dealing with a death in his family and did not travel with the team to New Orleans. Carolina told Hardy to take as much time as he needed. He'll finish the season with 61 tackles and 11 sacks. Hardy will enter the final year of his rookie deal in 2013 and could be an extension candidate this offseason. Frank Alexander and Mario Addison will fill in at right end this week.

Panthers RE Greg Hardy (not injury related) has been downgraded from probable to questionable for Week 17 versus the Saints.
Hardy is dealing with a family matter back home. His loss would be felt along the Carolina front. Hardy, 24, was once considered a top-ten draft talent when he was at Ole Miss, but character concerns forced him into the sixth round in 2010. He has finally started to live up to that potential. Hardy has racked up 11 sacks and 61 tackles this season to form a solid defensive end duo along with Charles Johnson in Carolina. Pro Football Focus has graded Hardy out as the sixth-best 4-3 end in the league through 16 weeks.

The Panthers renegotiated Jonathan Stewart's contract in late January.
Stewart's fully guaranteed $1 million 2013 base salary was lowered to $715,000, while he received a $2.5 million "signing bonus." That money was culled from future bonuses in Stewart's six-year, $37.811 million deal. His $1.5 million 2014 base salary is also now fully guaranteed. It's further proof DeAngelo Williams will likely be a post-June 1 cut.

Pilares went down during Sunday's win over the Redskins and will need surgery. His second NFL season ends with two catches for 42 yards and nine kickoff returns for 216 yards. Joe Adams figures to carry the load in the return game going forward.
