Matthews' responsibilities won't change; his primary job remains getting to the quarterback. Installed at left outside linebacker, first-rounder Nick Perry "will be given every opportunity to play early," said coach Mike McCarthy.

Packers OLB Clay Matthews' combined knockdowns and hits total of 38.5, which includes sacks, was fourth in the NFL this season.
The 2010 All Pro was widely perceived as having a down year after seeing his sacks total plummet from 14 to six, but the overall numbers show he remained one of the league's most effective pass rushers. Matthews should still be considered an elite IDP option heading into 2012.

Clay Matthews played the second half of last season with a stress fracture in his lower leg.
From Week 9 through the NFC Championship Game, Matthews was listed as "probable" on the injury report with a shin injury. It turns out that he was playing through a small fracture that entire time, which could help explain why he had just four sacks in Weeks 9-17 after racking up 10 in Weeks 1-8. It's scary to think what Matthews can do now that he's at 100 percent.

The Packers remain haunted by their 37-36 Week 15 loss to the Steelers in 2009 in which Ben Roethlisberger threw for a career-high 503 yards.
The Packers sacked Roethlisberger five times, but DC Dom Capers believes they had the opportunities for five more. As such, Capers is now imploring his unit to not bite on pump fakes next Sunday, and to exhibit textbook-tackling technique any time they get their hands on Pittsburgh's 6'5/241-pound signal-caller. It's easier said than done, but critical to Green Bay's chances.

Packers team physician, Dr. Pat McKenzie, is "hopeful" that RB Alex Green (ACL surgery) will be ready for training camp.
Already running four days a week, Green has graduated to "a little bit" of cutting. He's stayed ahead of schedule in his rehab all offseason. "My speed is picking up daily," Green said. "I'm definitely excited with where I'm at."

Packers FB John Kuhn has been diagnosed with an "MCL injury," and will not require surgery.
It's the best possible news for the would-be Pro Bowler, and means he should be back to 100 percent well before training camp. Kuhn signed a three-year, $7.5 million contract in July before leading the Packers in rushing TDs this season.

Greg Jennings (rib contusion) is expected to participate in the Pro Bowl.
"It's better than we thought initially after the game, so that's good news," coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday. It's still possible Jennings will ultimately skip the January 29 exhibition game, but it's clear the injury he suffered in Sunday's loss to the Giants isn't a long-term concern. Coming off a campaign where he made 67 catches for 949 yards and nine touchdowns in 13 games, Jennings will make $3.9 million in the final season of a four-year contract in 2012.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy acknowledged that TE Andrew Quarless (ACL, MCL surgery) will be "challenged" to be ready for training camp.
Quarless is a candidate to open the season on the PUP list. "Andrew, just from a timetable standpoint, is a question mark," McCarthy admitted. The Packers' top three tight ends to open the year should be Jermichael Finley, Tom Crabtree, and D.J. Williams. Quarless could reenter the mix around midseason.
