3/5/2012: Signed a five-year, $43.5 million contract. The deal contains $20.75 million guaranteed, including a $12.5 million signing bonus, Foster's first-year salary, and $3.25 million of his second-year salary. Foster is eligible for annual per-game roster bonuses worth up to $500,000 per year. 2012: $5 million, 2013: $5.25 million, 2014: $5.75 million, 2015: $6 million, 2016: $6.5 million, 2017: Free Agent

Texans re-signed RB Arian Foster to a five-year, $43.5 million contract, including $20.75 million guaranteed.
The deal pays roughly $30 million in its first three years, and includes a $12.5 million signing bonus. Foster will make $18 million in 2012, all but guaranteeing Mario Williams will be allowed to walk in free agency. As for Foster's contract, it's a steal for the Texans. He's easily been one of the NFL's top two running backs over the past two seasons, but the annual pay is only $8.7 million a year, fourth in the league at the position. Foster barely got more annual pay than DeAngelo Williams, and Williams even received more guaranteed. The Texans did have some leverage because they could have tagged or tendered Foster, but they won out here. Still just 25, Foster should be able to give the team at least three more strong seasons.

The Houston Chronicle maintains that restricted free agent Arian Foster remains the Texans' "most likely candidate" for the franchise tag.
Free agent DE/OLB Mario Williams has never been a candidate for the tag because of the prohibitive $22 million cap hit that would come with it, while the Texans aren't inclined to tag free agent C Chris Myers. The Chronicle believes the $30 million guaranteed Chris Johnson landed last summer could be the "starting point" if the Texans tag Foster as a means to jump-start long-term talks

Texans GM Rick Smith hinted Friday that using the franchise tag on restricted free agent Arian Foster remains a possibility.
"We will use every available option that we have," Smith said. "We’ll try to make the decisions that give us the best chance to impact our team. We’re having all of those conversations and discussions without revealing too much of what our thought process is." Even if Foster is tagged, long-term talks would continue.

The Houston Chronicle's John McClain suggests the Texans will consider placing the franchise tag on restricted free agent Arian Foster if the sides are close to an agreement by early March.
The team's preference is to sign Foster long-term, but the franchise tag could come into play as a way to keep the top back while continuing to negotiate. "Foster won't be going anywhere," McClain emphasizes. The team's goal is to lock up Foster, Mario Williams, and C Chris Myers while signing OLB Connor Barwin and LT Duane Brown to extensions. It's a tall order.

Coach Gary Kubiak insists Matt Schaub (Lisfranc surgery) could be partaking in OTAs if the Texans allowed him.
The Texans are exercising the utmost caution with Schaub, and getting promising second-year QB T.J. Yates extra reps. "Matt is fine," Kubiak said. "Matt, to be honest with you, could probably do individuals, could do 7-on-7, but we’re just being smart. When you haven’t passed a physical, you’re not going to step on the field." Schaub is expected to be fully cleared for training camp.

Andre Johnson (knee scope) has "no doubt" that he'll be ready for training camp.
"I feel like maybe in three, four more weeks, I’ll be probably ready to go," Johnson said. "It’s just a process. I’m not having any issues from the other injuries I had with my hamstrings and stuff like that." Johnson has missed 12 combined games over the past two seasons. He should still be one of the first 3-5 wide receivers drafted in fantasy football leagues this year.
