Dexter McCluster worked exclusively with the wide receivers during Chiefs OTA practice Monday.
The Chiefs tried to turn McCluster into a slot receiver as a rookie, but it didn't work. He moved back to tailback in 2011 and struggled mightily. The ticket to McCluster earning a roster spot in 2012 might be punt returns. We've previously speculated that McCluster could be on the bubble in training camp.

Chiefs RB/WR/KR Dexter McCluster is without a defined role this season.
McCluster saw increased playing time out of necessity down the stretch of the 2011 season. The Chiefs have since added Peyton Hillis, RB Cyrus Gray, and WR/KR Devon Wylie while welcoming back a healthy Jamaal Charles. It's fair to wonder if McCluster's roster spot is secure. He's a fantasy afterthought regardless.

Cognizant of Dexter McCluster's size limitations, coach Romeo Crennel suggested he would "manage" the scatback's playing time in 2012.
Thomas Jones (153 carries) and Jackie Battle (149) are both free agents. Jones, in particular, is unlikely to return while Battle's role will be scaled back. On the other hand, Jamaal Charles (ACL surgery) will return as the feature back. The first order of business should be to increase McCluster's effectiveness in the passing game.

Dexter McCluster rushed 12 times for 61 yards and a touchdown in Kansas City's Week 17 win over the Broncos, adding three catches for 25 yards.
The effort comes after McCluster was limited to just 130 total yards in his past three games. Despite looking eerily similar to Jamaal Charles in space, McCluster made a compelling case this season that he'll never be more than a decoy or change-of-pace back, surpassing both 60 yards rushing and 100 total yards only twice. As dynamic as any player in the league when he gets around the edge, McCluster simply lacks the power to do so with any consistency. He'll be little more than a flex option in deeper PPR leagues in 2012.

Jamaal Charles, Tony Moeaki and Eric Berry were each held out of the beginning of Chiefs OTAs on Monday.
All three players are in the final stages of their recoveries from torn ACLs. Each is expected to be at or extremely close to 100 percent for the beginning of camp. Charles recently estimated that he's "80 percent," and said he felt he can "do the same thing my teammates do." Kansas City will likely hold its dynamic trio out of next month's minicamp.

Chiefs TE Tony Moeaki (ACL surgery) expects to be at full strength for the opening of training camp in late July.
Moeaki has been running and lifting weights, but he's still unsure about his participation level in offseason practices beginning next month. Moeaki will be more than 10 months removed from surgery by the time camp opens, so his Week 1 status should in no way be in jeopardy.
