Coach Ken Whisenhunt indicated that the quarterback competition between Kevin Kolb and John Skelton will "start out as even as it possibly can."
"I think the knee-jerk reaction would be to say that it is Kevin's job to lose," Whisenhunt said. "But then you have to look at what John Skelton did last year in winning those games when he was in there." With an investment after last year's trade-and-sign, GM Rod Graves has suggested Kolb would remain the favorite. Whiz, on the other hand, insists the Cardinals will go with the "best player" after training camp and preseason action.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt told KTAR in Phoenix Friday that he believes John Skelton has "certainly" earned a chance to compete for the Cardinals' starting job in 2012.
"John certainly deserves it from the way that he played over the back half of the season," said Whisenhunt. "And Kevin (Kolb) certainly deserves it from the reason that we went out, got him, and brought him in. ... They’ve shown at times that they can do things, they’ve shown at times that they are knuckleheads and it’s our job to get the players there on our team to play better."

John Skelton had fluid drained from his knee before Sunday's win over the Seahawks.
Skelton then fainted, leading the Cardinals to believe he may not be able to start. He did, however, leading Arizona to its sixth win in eight appearances under its backup quarterback. Skelton was never listed on the injury report with a knee issue, so it shouldn't be a concern heading into the offseason. Coming off a wild season where he threw for 1,913 yards while posting an 11:14 TD:INT ratio, Skelton is likely to open 2012 as Kevin Kolb's backup.

Seattle Times
John Skelton completed 22-of-40 passes for 271 yards, one touchdown, and one interception against the Seahawks in Week 17.
As has been the case all season, Skelton was ineffective until the fourth quarter and overtime. He still finished with a 5-2 record in seven starts, completing 54.9 percent of his passes for an 11:14 TD-to-INT ratio and 7.0 YPA. The Cardinals will reportedly stick with Kevin Kolb in 2012, though Skelton figures to push him in training camp and early-season action. While he's not as accurate as Kolb, Skelton has better pocket presence, a stronger arm, and a willingness to make stick throws.

Beanie Wells acknowledged Tuesday that his January 24 right knee surgery was "a little more complicated" than simply repairing his damaged meniscus.
Beanie's agent confirmed to ESPN.com's Mike Sando that the running back did not undergo microfracture surgery "or any other procedure requiring an extended recovery period." Wells isn't practicing this week, though coach Ken Whisenhunt insists the team is playing it safe. Sitting out offseason drills has been the plan all along. "It's coming along pretty good," Wells said. "No setbacks at all, I'm feeling confident about being ready when the time is right." The Cardinals plan is for Beanie to be ready by the start of training camp.

Sidelined
Ryan Williams (knee) is doing most of his work on the side with a trainer during Cardinals OTAs.
Williams hasn't reached the point in his recovery where he's ready to participate with teammates. The Cardinals will limit his activity until training camp.

Updating a previous item, Cardinals TE Jeff King's right leg injury is a partially torn quadriceps tendon suffered in offseason workouts.
The injury did require surgery, though coach Ken Whisenhunt expects King to be ready for training camp. Whether or not he's back to 100 percent by August remains to be seen.
