Bears coach Lovie Smith said he's comfortable with J'Marcus Webb as the team's left tackle of the future.
"I don't want to picture it that we are looking for a left tackle," Smith said. "We feel comfortable with (J'Marcus Webb and Gabe Carimi). We like what we have right now for what we're going to do with them." The Bears have yet to schedule any free agent visits with linemen and are not expected to target a tackle with the No. 19 pick in the draft. Pro Football Focus graded Webb 67th among 76 NFL offensive tackles in 2011, and 65th in pass blocking.

New offensive coordinator Mike Tice expressed confidence in J'Marcus Webb as the Bears' left tackle of the future.
Pro Football Focus graded Webb 67th among 76 NFL offensive tackles in 2011, and 65th in pass blocking. "I thought he was adequate," said Tice. "His consistency grade was actually solid. What grade was bad was the critical errors, the sacks, penalties. ... And then you have an entire offseason (with) a chance to make him better. He is a very good run blocker. Do I think he is our guy moving forward? Yes, I do unless some miracle happens."

After getting pummeled by Shawne Merriman in the Bears' preseason opener, LT J'Marcus Webb drew the ire of position coach Mike Tice for saying in post-game comments that his "intensity" didn't measure up.
Webb was just being honest, but it's something that understandably would tick off Tice. "I have a problem with that - personally - that a player is saying that he didn't have the intensity level," Tice said. "I mean, [bleep], after sitting around for five months you should have plenty of intensity built up inside you. So I'm a little disappointed by that. ... He needs to step up, play better, and grow up quickly because he's out on an island."

Updating previous items, the Bears have now decided to move J'Marcus Webb to left tackle full-time.
"I feel athletically Webb is more suited to be over there," explained OL coach Mike Tice. First-round pick Gabe Carimi will man the right side, with Frank Omiyale now in the "swing" tackle role. The Bears are really rolling the dice that Webb will take a leap as a pass protector this season. He struggled badly at right tackle last year, and that's supposedly an easier position.

According to ESPN Chicago's Mike Wright, Johnny Knox (back surgery) looked "very frail" on the practice field in OTAs.
Knox revealed that he's lost 30 pounds since last year. After major surgery to stabilize his vertebra on December 19, Knox is in danger of missing the entire season. Already a relatively skinny player, the fact that he's not staying muscle bound suggests Knox doesn't plan on playing football anytime soon.
