7/28/2010: Signed a six-year, $39.8 million contract. The deal contains $20.4 million guaranteed, including a $4.575 million signing bonus, $3.47 million first-year "option" bonus, and Gates' first two years' base salaries. His 2012 salary and $2.4 million of his 2013 salary are guaranteed for injury (not skill). 2012: $4 million (+ $6.4 million option bonus), 2013: $4.5 million, 2014: $5 million, 2015: $5.9 million, 2016: Free Agent

Coach Norv Turner indicated that Antonio Gates (foot) is finally back to pre-injury form.
"Gates looks great -— he's back," Turner said. "Physically, he's back to where we want him to be." Gates is joining teammates for OTAs after spending last offseason recovering from a plantar fascia injury. Despite missing three games and playing through pain in several others, Gates still finished as the No. 7 fantasy tight end last season. He will remain in the top-four in Rotoworld's Draft Guide.

Antonio Gates (foot) says he's almost back to 100-percent and will "definitely" return to his All-Pro form.
Gates has missed nine games over the last two seasons and wasn't playing at full health when active. He's been a full participant in San Diego's voluntary workout program, however, and is closing in on a return to full health. "We're getting there," Gates said. "It's definitely going to get back to that [All-Pro form]. I think that's what makes me excited, coming to prove I'm still one of the elite guys at this position." Gates is a top-five fantasy tight end in 2012.

Antonio Gates caught five balls for 106 yards and a touchdown in the Chargers' Week 17 win over the Raiders.
Gates finished his ninth NFL season with 778 yards and seven scores on 64 catches. The 32-year-old (in June) can't run like he used to, but Gates continues to defy age with crafty route running while benefiting from lots of single coverage. Defenses were often more concerned with Vincent Jackson in 2011. Gates doesn't offer the fantasy upside he once did, but he'll likely be ranked as a top-three tight end for 2012, behind Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham.

Antonio Gates was limited to four catches for 40 yards in San Diego's Week 16 loss to the Lions.
Aside from breaking Charlie Joiner's Chargers' team record for receptions, it was a lost day for Gates, who had his best play (an acrobatic one-handed grab for a first down early in the second half) wiped out by a holding penalty. Limited to six catches for 71 yards in his past two games, Gates should be able to end the season on a high note in Week 17 against a Raiders' pass defense that allowed 300 yards passing to Kyle Orton Sunday.
