After watching every 2011 snap taken by Cam Newton and Matthew Stafford, NFL Films guru Greg Cosell deemed them, "without any qualification," the two best young quarterbacks in the league.
The trick for Stafford was just staying healthy. For Newton, it involved transitioning from Auburn's option offense into Rob Chudzinski's pro-style scheme. "I watched every Newton snap in 2011, and the reality was he played exceptionally well from the pocket," Cosell wrote. "He was poised and composed, decisive and accurate. He stood tall and delivered the ball in the eye of the storm. He made difficult throws into tight coverage." Cam turned 23 last week, and Stafford is 24.

Defending Offensive Rookie of the Year Cam Newton believes the improvement he's made this offseason is "through the roof."
Newton made the comments Saturday at Auburn University, where his alma mater was unveiling a statue commemorating his Heisman Trophy winning 2010 season. One of the best rookie quarterbacks in league history will surely take a step forward in 2012, but how big of a step could be contingent on what Carolina does in the draft. Newton would benefit greatly from added weapons, or a breakout season from third-year WR Brandon LaFell.

Cam Newton was announced as the Associated Press' NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year on Saturday.
It was an easy choice. Newton set several team and league records, including the most rushing touchdowns in a season by a quarterback, and became the first player in NFL history to surpass 4,000 passing yards and 500 yards rushing. No quarterback had won the award since Ben Roethlisberger in 2004. Newton received 47 votes to three for Bengals QB Andy Dalton, winning in a landslide. As for Dalton, you can make a pretty good case that teammate A.J. Green was more deserving of votes. We're slightly surprised Cowboys RT Tyron Smith didn't get any consideration.

Cam Newton completed 15-of-25 passes for 158 yards with one touchdown and one interception and added six rushes for 32 yards in the Week 17 loss to the Saints.
Newton's rookie campaign ends with a dud. But it won't overshadow the historic numbers he was able to put up this season. Newton threw for 4,051 yards, ran for 706 more and totaled 35 touchdowns. Most importantly, he functioned as the Panthers' goal-line back, allowing him to set the NFL record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 14. With a full offseason to work on his flaws, Newton has the potential to be even better as a lock top-5 fantasy quarterback in 2012. The biggest concern is the possible loss of impressive offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski.
