NFL suspended TE Weslye Saunders four games for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing substances.
Saunders' resume was a red flag-filled mess coming out of South Carolina last year, and was ultimately the reason he went undrafted. He's now in trouble again. An oft-used blocker after making the Steelers out of training camp, Saunders played about 15 snaps a game and held his own in pass protection. The 23-year-old only caught four passes for 29 yards and a touchdown.

Former NFL scout Russ Lande of the Sporting News believes undrafted rookie TE Weslye Saunders fits with the Steelers "perfectly."
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette confirms the Steelers "like Saunders but he has a lot to learn." Listed at 6'6/273 with outstanding athleticism, Saunders looks like former Steelers Pro Bowler Eric Green coming off the bus. Saunders' below-average college production and character concerns are red flags, but he landed in a rock-solid organization with an excellent coaching staff. He's merely a developmental project at this point.

South Carolina TE Weslye Saunders will undergo surgery to repair the stress fracture in his left foot on Friday.
Saunders put off the procedure in order to work out at the Gamecocks' Wednesday Pro Day, and was able to run a forty-yard dash as well as perform position drills (ala Julio Jones). Unfortunately, Saunders is not nearly as highly rated as the Alabama wide receiver. Due to myriad off-field concerns and now the injury, we're not even sure Saunders will be drafted.

South Carolina TE Weslye Saunders has opted against surgery to repair the stress fracture in his foot.
Saunders' injury is similar to that of Alabama WR Julio Jones, but he's going the rehab route instead. Though his recovery is expected to last through May, he's fully expected to participate in South Carolina's March 30 Pro Day.

Coach Mike Tomlin confirmed Tuesday the Steelers expect Rashard Mendenhall (torn ACL) to play in 2012, but conceded he may begin the year on the PUP list.
In reality, Mendenhall is a near certainty to begin the year on the PUP list after tearing his ACL in Week 17 last season. Tomlin and GM Kevin Colbert are both now on the record as expecting their running back to play this season, but it's far from a slam dunk. Mendenhall is off the radar in redraft leagues.

Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer (broken foot) has begun running and cutting.
Dwyer expects to be on the field for OTAs, though his participation level remains up in the air. Dwyer does still have soreness in the foot, but he insists it's nothing serious. If Rashard Mendenhall (ACL surgery) isn't ready to start the season, Dwyer could emerge as Isaac Redman's top backup.

Steelers RB Baron Batch (ACL surgery) will not practice with rookies and first-year players at minicamp on Friday.
Now nine months removed from surgery, Batch is eligible to practice but is apparently not ready to do so. It's possible the 2011 seventh-rounder suffered a recent setback, as he indicated in late March that he was cleared for all offseason workouts.
