Redskins OC Kyle Shanahan was impressed that Roy Helu "got tougher throughout the [season]" as a rookie.
"He's not a tough guy, but he handled the pounding in the NFL," said Shanahan. "The biggest key with NFL backs is when you get hit for nothing or one yard, do you follow forward for three yards or do you fall back for zero yards? He really finished runs well ... He was able to do it throughout the game and not get worn down by it." Helu will likely be the lead back in a tandem attack in 2012.

Roy Helu totaled 52 yards and a touchdown in Week 17 against the Eagles.
Evan Royster started and received the majority of carries with Helu at less than full health. Helu is expected to be the starter in Washington next season, but the Redskins may look to transition to a running back by committee situation with Royster as their primary short-yardage back. In just five starts, Helu posted 151 rushing attempts for 640 yards and two touchdowns.

The Redskins are apparently comfortable enough with Helu's health to let him play in this meaningless season finale. Still, we wouldn't expect a full workload. Helu is at less than 100 percent and Evan Royster flashed plenty of potential in his start last week. Some kind of timeshare makes sense.

Roy Helu (ankle, toe) practiced on a limited basis Friday and is questionable for Week 17 versus the Eagles.
Coach Mike Shanahan wants to see how Helu's ankle and toe respond in warmups, but the rookie insists he's "good to go" and fully expects to play. We suspect his workload will be cut back after Evan Royster's promising outing last week. Both players are closer to flex territory against an improved Philly defense.

Hightower got in a conditioning workout after Monday's practice, but Roy Helu and Evan Royster are taking the first-team reps at tailback. Hightower already knows the offense, so he won't be behind when training camp starts. Beat writer Chris Russell expects him to be medically cleared "by mid July."

Rich Tandler of CSN Washington is the latest Redskins beat writer to list Leonard Hankerson as a starter over Josh Morgan.
Hankerson is coming off hip surgery, but figures to be practice-ready by June 11 minicamp. Tandler considers Pierre Garcon, Hankerson, and Morgan the only locks to make the team, which seems to give Morgan the advantage over Santana Moss for the No. 3 job. Hankerson, Morgan, and Moss figure to see time in the slot.
