Patric Hornqvist popped in three goals and added an assist to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 5-2 triumph over the visiting New York Rangers in Game 1 of the opening round of the playoffs.
Hornqvist scored two of his three goals in the third period to record the first playoff hat trick of his NHL career. He had his first regular-season hat trick on Feb. 29 against the Arizona Coyotes. The veteran right winger gave the Pens a 1-0 lead at 19:42 of the first period and assisted on a Sidney Crosby goal at 18:56 of the second. Crosby and Phil Kessel assisted on Hornqvist's second goal on a power play. That gave the Pens a 4-1 lead at 8:02 of the third period. Crosby picked up his second assist on Hornqvist's third goal, at 17:10 of the third. That one made it 5-2. Tom Kuhnhackl scored the Pens' other goal Wednesday. It came shorthanded, at 5:31 of the third. The Pens never trailed in the game despite being outshot 37-31 by the Rangers. Game 2 of the series goes Saturday. Apr 13 - 11:53 PM
