"[General manager] Don [Maloney] did a lot of homework on him, not just watch a lot of video of him playing, but a lot of homework on his personality, coach Dave Tippett said. Sometimes, you get players that are outcasts in the dressing room. That wasn't the case. He was at the forefront of leadership, things he was trying to do. He posted an assist on Taylor Pyatt's power-play goal to open the scoring in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Kings in Game 5. With the defeat the Coyotes are done in the 2012 playoffs and the Kings will play for the Stanley Cup. Vrbata led the Coyotes with 35 goals during the regular season, but he found the back of the net just two times in 16 postseason games. The fourth line of Gilbert Brule, Kyle Chipchura and Daymond Langkow have combined for nine points in the Yotes' eight playoff games. Brule has two markers, Chipchura one and Langkow four assists. If you're getting that kind of production from your bottom line, you should be tough to beat. "Those guys are really solid players for us," coach Dave Tippett said. The Coyotes defenseman has been hit in the face three times this postseason. He began the playoffs with six points in seven games, but then took a stick to the face in Game 6 against the Blackhawks, returning to play with a full-cage helmet. He got rid of the cage because it was distracting his vision, and then took a puck to the chin against the Predators in Game 2 of the second-round series. The bad luck continued in Game 1 of the Western Conference final, when Dustin Brown's shot deflected off of goalie Mike Smith and into Klesla's face. "I guess it's kind of tough luck," Klesla said. "In this game, you get hit in your face every once in a while, maybe every couple of years. To get hit three times in three weeks is a bit strange." May 15 |
