Roland McKeown was chosen by the Los Angeles Kings with the 50th overall pick in the 2014 draft.
The Kings traded Linden Vey to Vancouver to acquire the selection. McKeown is considered the best pure skater among blueliners, and he is blessed with an exceptional hockey IQ. He has an NHL-ready body with the hockey smarts and anticipation to allow him to be effective in all areas of the game, including the power play and penalty kill. He understands his responsibilities and makes the simple play. While he is athletic with great tools, he hasn’t yet asserted himself as an offensive force. His speed enables him to break up plays on the defensive side, an area he’s improved in. Although McKeown isn’t overly physical, he isn’t afraid to push guys away. He does need to work on his pinching reads, which should come with experience. He is among the safer bets to become a steady NHL defenseman, which probably contributed to the Kings' willingness to move up to get him. Jun 28 - 12:16 PM
