Clint Dempsey was the hero yet again and the United States were able to make their two goal cushion stand, squeezing past Ecuador, 2-1.
Dempsey opened the scoring in this one in the 22nd minute, heading in a pinpoint cross from Jermaine Jones, giving him a goal in three consecutive matches in this tournament. In the second half, a double red card brought both sides down to ten men, with Jones being shown a straight red for making contact with an opponent's face. The US would double their lead in the 65th minute though. A cross was delivered to Gyasi Zardes who headed it back into the path of Dempsey. His shot was stopped but the resulting loose ball gave Zardes a simple tap-in. Things began to crack from that moment on however, as Ecuador would pull one back less than 10 minutes later and the final quarter hour was a test of withstanding consistent pressure from Ecuador. The US held though, but disciplinary issues will see them without influential Bobby Wood, Jones and Alejandro Bedoya in the semis. Jun 16 - 11:42 PM
