Chelsea incurred their first loss of the season by being the latest victim of Alan Pardew's success with his substitution choices, as Newcastle United would use two Papiss Cisse goals to hang on to a 2-1 final.
Jose Mourinho does not like the northern side of England. Coming into today, no opposing ground has given the Chelsea manager more trouble over the years and today may have turned a fleeting superstition into an ironclad truth. Not to mention his home unbeaten record was shattered by northern neighbors Sunderland, who also managed to be the only club to keep Chelsea out of goal this season. Remarkable stuff. Mourinho pulled no punches with his XI, it was his strongest team aside from the suspended Nemanja Matic, and in the first half they dominated possession but the chances created were off target. Once Newcastle went up by two in the second half, the wheels came off as Fabregas and Diego Costa were carded in rapid succession. They got back in the game late due to a man advantage, but it was not to be. Fabregas did manage to assist the lone goal headed in by Didier Drogba, but every other Chelsea player's fantasy day was a disaster. Dec 6 - 9:58 AM
