Southampton are resigned to losing Charlie Austin for a ‘significant period’ after tests confirm the striker suffered extensive damage to his hamstring.
The 28-year-old was forced off during the 1-1 draw with Huddersfield, a game which incidentally, saw the striker receive a retrospective ban for violent conduct following his challenge on goalkeeper Jonas Lössl. Austin was handed a three-match suspension by the Football Association, but based on an initial assessment, he now looks set to miss a lot more through injury. "Charlie will be probably out for a long period of time," said Pellegrino. "It is a little bit more serious [than we first thought]." Striking responsibilities fell to Shane Long at Tottenham [GW20], but the Republic of Ireland international isn’t known for his scoring prowess with his last top-flight goal coming at Sunderland almost 10 months ago. The Saints boss could look to Manolo Gabbiadini who hit the ground running following his arrival from Napoli a year ago, however, he has failed to recapture his form since recovering from a groin strain back in April.
