Charlie Austin has until January 7th to respond to a Football Association charge of an ‘abusive and/or insulting’ gesture which occurred during Saints’ 3-1 home defeat by Manchester City (GW20).
The 29-year-old appeared to make a two-fingered sign towards fans as he was substituted. In 2013, Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere served a two-game suspension for a similar offence while Liverpool striker Luis Suarez missed one match and was fined £20,000 after he raised his middle finger as he walked off the pitch following a defeat at Fulham back in 2011. The news of a potential ban will come as a blow for manager Ralph Hasenhüttl after Danny Ings was replaced at the break on Wednesday due to a tight hamstring. The striker will be fully assessed but the Southampton boss has already suggested that he could miss the rest of January. Manolo Gabbiadini is attracting a lot of interest and could leave during the transfer window. And with youngster Michael Obafemi sidelined, Shane Long may be the only experienced attacker available when the Premier League fixtures resume. Jan 3 - 10:28 AM
