Spain were once again outplayed on both sides of the ball, suffering a 0-2 loss to a determined Chile and eliminating themselves from the World Cup in incredible fashion.
An unfathomable outcome for Spain in this tournament. In their three prior major tournaments, Euro 2008, World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012, they won them all, while conceding just a grand total of 6 goals. In their first two matches in Brazil, they shipped 7. It is hard to believe that 16 of their 23-man squad were together to dominate in South Africa 4 years ago. In this tournament, their attack was consistently stifled in final third, perhaps due to a lack of width, and their trademark defending was rife with errors. David Silva did very little in his two starts and bench players could not make an impact. Juan Mata has yet to see the pitch but perhaps with their fate sealed, we may see him and other unused players in their final game against Cameroon. Jun 18 - 5:04 PM
