Florian Lejeune is back on Tyneside to begin the next phase of his recovery from a serious knee ligament injury.
The Frenchman has spent the last 8 weeks in Rome having undergone reconstructive surgery following a training ground injury which left Lejeune clinging onto his season before a ball had been kicked. Ordinarily, players who rupture their ACL can expect to miss between 9-12 months, but Rafa Benitez is hoping for a much quicker return with Lejeune being put through an accelerated rehab programme. The United boss first used Professor Paolo Mariani while at Napoli – sending forward Lorenzo Insigne – and then in 2016, winger Rolando Aarons flew to Italy to undergo a similar procedure. "In our experience with this surgeon, it takes less ... between four and six months. It depends what is going on and if we have any complications." Following a difficult start to the campaign, and with a limited transfer budget, a return in early 2019 would be much welcomed at St James’ Park. Oct 13 - 12:44 PM
