Scoring only his second goal in 33 appearances, Shane Long was the unlikely hero for Southampton in a 2-1 victory over Leicester City.
Southampton got off to a bright start in this one even though Charlie Austin, Danny Ings, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg were all unavailable for selection. Nampalys Mendy gifted the Saints a chance when he went for a studs-up tackle on Shane Long in the box. James Ward-Prowse drove the penalty home and it looked like it would be smooth sailing for the Saints. Rashness from teenager Yan Valery would change that as he was sent off for a bad challenge but Southampton would persevere. Mendy was on the wrong end of a decision yet again as a bad pass landed at the feet of Shane Long who would beat Kasper Schmeichel to score. Claude Puel would throw on recently recalled Harvey Barnes and Demarai Gray in the second half but while Wilfred Ndidi was able to pull a goal back, it wasn’t enough as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team was able to keep composure to hold on for an important victory.
