Southampton completed the signing of Polish centre-back Jan Bednarek at the start of this month.
The club shelled out £5 million ($6.4m) for the 21 year old, who arrives from Lech Poznan on a five year contract. Southampton had been looking to sign a new centre-back in the January transfer window to replace captain Jose Fonte after he moved to West Ham, though their efforts were unsuccessful up until this point. Bednarek has represented his country at all junior levels, most recently at the Under 21 Euros where he and his team had a number of disappointing performances. Bednarek won his place in Poznan's starting XI for the first time last season when he helped stem a five game winless run by scoring in a 2-1 win. He continued to impress as Lech finished 3rd in the league and made it to the Polish Cup final. Their defence was the league's tightest, conceding just 22 times. He was also deemed the 2016 ‘Discovery of the Season’ by a Polish football site. He is unlikely to start for Southampton in the short term but could blossom into an important first team player.
