Sam Allardyce confirmed during his FA Cup press-conference that Andy Carroll would have a full diagnosis on Friday after a recurrence of his knee injury at Southampton. The initial prognosis suggested between 4-6 weeks, but news broke just hours later confirming the former Newcastle striker would undergo surgery ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign.
This setback – the latest in a long line since his move from Liverpool – will serve as a huge blow for Carroll who had been hoping for an injury-free run-in after spending the first four months of the season sidelined following surgery in the summer to fix and tighten ankle ligaments. Carroll picked up the original problem at Anfield in January but after 10 days he was able to return to the group and train ahead of the trip to St Marys on Wednesday. However his second half introduction didn’t go as planned and after a pretty innocuous challenge Carroll felt his knee again although he did remain on the pitch – already used 3 subs – despite his inability to move freely.
