Newcastle United were trading blows with Tottenham for the majority of the match but a second half sending off of Jonjo Shelvey opened the door for the visitors and the Magpies would eventually lose, 0-2.
On the one hand, there were plenty of positives to take away from Newcastle's performance today. They kept stride with Tottenham throughout the first half and, though they didn't create a major chance, they did put on pressure. However, they lost two defenders to injury in the opening 45 minutes, a harrowing reminder of the injury struggles they had in their last stay in the top flight, as Paul Dummett and Florian Lejeune had to depart. The tide of the match changed early in the second half when Jonjo Shelvey made a silly stamp of his boot on Dele Alli's ankle, who was sitting on the ground following a tackle, and the Magpies were forced down to 10 men. It proved too much to ask as Spurs would score twice in a nine minute span to secure the points. Shelvey's absence next week should spell the debut of Dortmund loanee Mikel Merino while we wait to see the extent of injuries in defense. Aug 13 - 10:45 AM
