Southampton picked up a point from a goalless draw at Manchester United despite being without first-choice goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino was rewarded for his decision to rest Forster, as Alex McCarthy made three saves and kept a clean sheet on his first start of the season. The Saints were denied an early lead when David de Gea ranged low to deny James Word-Prowse's low strike after six minutes, before Juan Mata forced a save from McCarthy and Jesse Lingard headed wide. The start of the second-half presented Shane Long with the Saint's best chance to win the match, but De Gea fought off the strike with a superb leg save. Paul Pogba did have the ball in the net for the apparent match-winner on 82 minutes, but his goal was ruled out for offsides. Overall, it was a good result for Southampton, who remain 13th in the table despite a run of eight matches without a win. Sat, Dec 30, 2017 03:16:00 PM
