Sunderland have been given permission to speak with Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes after a compensation package was agreed between the two clubs.
The Black Cats identified the 45-year-old as their number one target following the departure of David Moyes, who left the Stadium of Light following Sunderland’s relegation from the top-flight. But, Dave Cormack, the new major shareholder at Pittodrie, says the club will "move heaven and earth" to keep McInnes: "Derek is extremely happy here. It's not just down to money. He's a very astute individual." McInnes began his managerial career at St Johnstone, spending almost 4 years at McDiarmid Park before moving to Bristol City who were rooted to the bottom of the Championship. An eight-game unbeaten run saved club from relegation, however, the following year saw Bristol struggle once again, and after seven straight losses, he was sacked in January 2013. McInnes then joined Aberdeen, enjoying his most successful season to date in 2016/17, guiding the Dons to second place in the Scottish Premiership and reaching both domestic cup finals.
