Pep Guardiola was forced to defend his decision to play John Stones as a defensive midfielder in the defeat to Crystal Palace.
Fernandinho has quietly went about his work this season starting in all of the previous 17 Premier League outings (only Ederson has more) and his importance to the side cannot be understated. The Brazilian’s absence on Saturday was clearly evident as City fell to their first league defeat at home in more than 8 months. There had been concerns heading into GW18 that Fernandinho was struggling with a thigh problem, but he managed 90 minutes before missing the Carabao Cup win over Leicester which saw Stones deployed in an unfamiliar role. "Dinho is injured, yesterday he felt that problem [again in training]," Guardiola confirmed post-match. "John played so good in Leicester, I wanted to give another option for the long balls." However, it was a move which backfired, and finding themselves down at the break, Otamendi was hooked for Sergio Aguero with Stones dropping deeper. There is no news on a potential return for Fernandinho currently. Sun, Dec 23, 2018 10:34:00 AM
