Oregon State senior transfer Ryan Katz has been named the starting QB for San Diego State by head coach Rocky Long.
Katz received the majority of first-team reps this spring and that momentum carried into preseason practices. Katz is enrolled as a graduate student, so he will only hold the starting job for one season. In three seasons with the Beavers, including starting the 2010 season, Katz threw for 2,737 yards including 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

It has been a good spring for transfer Ryan Katz, who has been getting the bulk of the first-team reps at QB.
The senior transfer from Oregon State is emerging as the lead candidate to take over for Ryan Lindley. As a graduate, Katz is eligible to play in 2012 and he has wasted no time in showing coach Rocky Long that he wants the job. Not that there is much in the way of experienced competition. Still, Katz is allowing Long to breathe a little easier. In three seasons with the Beavers, including as their starter in 2010, Katz threw for 2,737 yards and 18/12.

Spring practice for Ryan Katz is about adjustng to new environs after transferring from Oregon State in the hope of succeeding Ryan Lindley at SDSU.
Katz’s final season in Corvallis was forgettable. Benched in the opener – a loss to Sacramento State of the FCS – he was never able re-gain the top job, which went to redshirt freshman Sean Mannion. Katz threw only 25 passes in two games last season, but has 14 career starts. He started all 12 games for the Beavers in 2010, throwing for 2,401 yards and 17 TDs. As a graduate, he will be able to play immediately for the Aztecs.

Oregon State quarterback Ryan Katz has been released from his scholarship and will transfer.
Katz started every game for the Beavers in 2010, throwing for over 2,000 yards with 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He began the 2011 season as the starter but was benched in favor of Sean Mannion during the team's first game of the year. Katz will be graduating in March and will not have to sit out a year if he chooses a school with a graduate program not offered at Oregon State. The terms of his release also state that Katz cannot join another team in the Pac-12 for his final year of eligibility.
