Oregon State QB Sean Mannion "has the ability to be a very solid pro signal-caller" if given a "[good] NFL supporting cast," wrote NFL Media analyst Charles Davis.
The crux of Davis' argument is that Mannion's draft stock plummeted because his numbers dropped off in 2014 (4,662 yards and 37 touchdowns in 2013 to 3,164/15), explaining that the reason this was so was due to a weaker supporting cast around him. We disagree with the very premise: If Mannion was overrated in 2013 -- and throwing to Brandin Cooks in a pro-style collegiate offense has a way of making mortals look good -- you're compounding the original mis-evaluational by pawning off his crashing-back-to-earth 2014 production (he played similarly in 2011 and 2012) as the fault of his supporting cast. "Despite the dropoff in production, Mannion is actually gaining momentum as he makes a case to be the third quarterback drafted behind Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota," Davis wrote. If so, a mistake is brewing, reader. The immobile Mannion struggled mightily with pressure throughout his tenure, even when Cooks was around to bail him out. Mar 24 - 11:51 PM
