Louisiana Tech coach Skip Holtz will start redshirt junior Scotty Young in the team's opener Saturday at North Carolina State.
A blast from the past for you recruitniks, Young signed with Texas Tech as a Top-10 QB recruit in 2010 after throwing for 8,962 yards and 129 TDs in two seasons as a high school starter at Denton (Texas) Ryan. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound signal-caller chose TTU because of Mike Leach's Air Raid offense, stuck with TTU after Leach was dismissed, didn't see the field in 2011 after redshirting his first year on campus, transferred to Louisiana Tech to play in Sonny Dykes' aerial offense, watched Dykes bolt for Cal, and saw his new school hire an old-school proponent of the run, Skip Holtz. It hasn't been the easiest ride so far, but perhaps Young's situation is on the upswing: Holtz lured offensive coordinator Tony Petersen away from Marshall, where Petersen directed an offense that ranked second in the nation in passes thrown last year.
